Jim Crawford | StrangeCo Valued Customer Since: 2003
Jim Crawford is happy he followed up on a craze he noticed in 2000. While traveling in Japan and Hong Kong, Jim saw that there was an incredible buzz about products that straddled the line between toys and art, so Jim decided to start collecting them. In 2003, as the designer toy craze really built up momentum, Jim and a long-time college friend started Strange Co., a company that produces distinctive statues and sculptures based on animated cartoons and underground comic characters. At first Strange Co. was based out of their apartment and sold most of its merchandise on Ebay. Then a few retail and specialty shops started springing up and taking advantage of this niche market. That's when Jim and Gregory decided they needed grow their business by creating postcards, tradeshow materials and other printed marketing materials. After having a bad experience with another printer, Jim was referred to PsPrint by a friend. Jim appreciated being able to place his order online and liked knowing the status of his order at all times. But PsPrint's customer service team really cemented his commitment to PsPrint. "I had just returned from a tradeshow in Southern California and had only 12 hours before I had to leave for a tradeshow on the East Coast," states Jim. "I was all out of printed materials, so I contacted PsPrint, and discovered that they had a printing facility in Pennsylvania that could print and send the materials overnight". Crawford continues, "not only was I able to save time but I also saved money since the shipping from Pennsylvania to New York was minimal. That's what you need in a printer: reliability, quality, and timeliness. I will not be using any other printing company but PsPrint". Jim's advice to new entrepreneurs: do your research and know what you're getting into. Above all, make sure to stick with it, even when things go wrong and you feel like you're on the verge of failure.

Liz Litaea | Windsor Capitol Mortgage Valued Customer Since: 2004
After Liz Litaea bought and sold several properties for investment purposes, she was quite disheartened by the service she received from a number of mortgage brokers. Liz decided to change professions and in 2004 passed all of the requirements and obtained her mortgage broker license. Liz really believes that home ownership is important and is dedicated to helping make the dreams of first time homebuyers come true. "For me, whether I'm helping a first time homebuyer or helping a family buy investment property, I'm so excited to be part of their lives and help them achieve their dreams," states Liz. "I really see my role as a trusted advisor to ensure that my customers have the best experience possible and make the right choices to achieve their goals." The first thing Liz does when she meets a client is to offer a worksheet that provides a complete picture of their goals. Liz's recommendation to her clients is to consider whether they are looking for tax benefits, financial freedom, investment property, a return on remodeling investment or something else. No matter what their goal, she is constantly looking for ways to make the house work for her clients. A friend referred Liz to PsPrint when she was looking for marketing materials. Liz decided to try PsPrint for business cards on her first order. She truly enjoyed the ease of use the website provided, along with quality and pricing. "I was surprised at how quickly I received my business cards and the quality was great" states Liz. "And the prices are great, too." Liz's advice for someone just starting out in the mortgage industry: Make sure you look at your client's needs and goals. Don't consider "just negotiating this loan and moving on to the next" because you will always be chasing deals and not making revenue. Take on the role of a trusted advisor to your client and you have a friend for life. You have the power to help people realize their dreams and that's a great feeling.

Rita Reeds | Reeds Edwards Company Valued Customer Since: 2006
Rita Reeds has over 25 years of experience in the publishing industry including spending time in New York as a Vice President for a prominent publishing giant. She noticed the problems that new writers experienced trying to publish their first book. After reading a manuscript “Painting the Invisible Man” Rita decided that it was time to do something. About 6 months ago, she started her own company – Reeds Edwards Company – dedicated exclusively to promoting new writers. “There is so much writing talent out there but the system is really tough against new writers” states Rita. Reeds Edwards Company prefers to find 2 new writers a year and work with them exclusively. The company is looking for general fiction and memoirs, short story collections, or historical fiction. What makes Reeds Edwards unique is that the company does all of the marketing and incurs all of the costs for the book release. As Rita was preparing to launch the latest book she realized that she wanted to obtain postcards as one way to promote the book signing. After talking to friends and clients, Rita was referred to PsPrint. She requested a sample kit as she is very particular about quality and style. “I was quite impressed with the wide variety of items in the sample pack including posters, postcards, brochures along with an array of finishes, including gloss, flat, matte and more” stated Rita. She then had her graphic designer create the art and placed the first order. She liked the easy to use system and the complete control she had over the project. “In fact, PsPrint was so easy to use, delivered great quality, and was quite cost effective, that I’ve already recommended the services to two other clients.” And the promotional postcards worked very well as the book signing was a success.

Rita’s advice to anyone writing a book “before you submit your book or manuscript, get three people you know and trust, who will be brutally honest with you, to read your book. Write from what you know”. Rita also states that contrary to what you may have heard, there is no perfect style. “A story is a living breathing thing. It tells you where it wants to go. Don’t listen to rules; just find your voice – a voice that’s comfortable and true to you”.

Tim Rose | Mobile Sculpture Valued Customer Since: 2006
Tim Rose has been a sculptor and artist for more than 40 years. He started out as a sculptor on the side, creating works of art for family and friends. Then one day someone bought some pieces from Tim and he realized this was what he wanted to do full time. These days he mostly works on commissioned projects. He shares a large studio on Mare Island with a group of twelve artists, each specializing in a different type of art, from wood working to photography. Once a year, around autumn, they conduct an open studio to the public. The group generally publicizes the event via direct mail. Tired of having to beg for cheaper prices from local printers, Tim decided to search the Internet to find a quick and cost effective way to develop postcards for the upcoming show. That’s how he discovered PsPrint. “I’m not a graphic designer and I needed a system that was easy to use and fast,” states Tim. “That’s what I discovered with PsPrint. And if I had any questions, the customer service team was very friendly and helped me every step of the way.” Over 5,000 people attended their most recent open studio event.

Tim states that he’s traveled a hard road, working the arts and crafts shows on weekends, and having to listen to criticism from the public. But he states that the arts and crafts shows are a good way to hear what people have to say about your art. “You need to learn very quickly to separate your personal feelings from your pieces. Some people can be hurtful, making comments along the line of ‘I can do that’ but if you listen, you can take the kernel you need to improve your work. Tim’s advice for artists just starting out: 10% is inspiration and 90% is hard work. The most successful artists know that persistence brings success. If you’re not in the studio when inspiration hits, you will not be able to create the masterpiece.

Amy Boam | Fresno Chaffee Zoo Valued Customer Since: 2006
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo was established in the early 1900’s but did not begin to grow until the 1940’s when it was operated by the city. Two years ago, the city decided that the zoo should be run by a private corporation but should continue to be a non-profit. When taxpayers passed measure Z in 2004, the zoo started plans for significantly expanding the facilities and the animal occupancy. Amy Boam has been the Marketing Associate at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo for almost a year and is responsible for all the marketing and communication projects for the Zoo, including producing a quarterly member newsletter, promoting the membership benefits program, organizing special activities, and a variety of other promotional projects. Amy discovered PsPrint while conducting an online search for a printing company. She requested a sample packet and was impressed with the quality of products. When a special event came up suddenly, Amy needed cards printed quickly and at a reasonable price. She used the online pricing estimate at PsPrint.com and discovered that she could have the cards on time and on budget. “I was most impressed with the turnaround time and the quality. Also, when I needed help with my artwork and uploading my file, customer service was helpful and talked me through the process.” Now the zoo is looking forward to their next event, the Producer’s Ice Cream Zoofari, being held on August 18th in which visitors to the zoo can enjoy tempting sundaes, root beer floats, sherbets and smoothies throughout the park. If you go, consider purchasing a family membership to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. You’ll be able to visit the zoo as often as you like and help support the animals, all for only $50.

Chris Gingrich | GinGalley Valued Customer Since: 2003
Chris Gingrich provides a wide variety of services for his niche clients: bands, artists and entertainment agencies. Chris had been around printing all of his life, when back in Pennsylvania, he started out in a letter press company and then graduated to silk screening. After moving to California in 1995, Chris enrolled in college and discovered that he was very good at web design. He also began working part time at a CD manufacturing plant where he became friends with artists and entertainers. It was there that Chris came to the aid of a friend who was releasing his first CD. The cover art was not eye catching, to say the least, so Chris re-designed the cover just in time to make the print run. The rest, as they say, is history. Word spread fast about his design capabilities and soon enough, Chris realized that he could be creative and make a good income designing. Chris branched out on his own in 2000, with photography, video, and web design services to complement his CD cover art and marketing design services. One of the biggest hurdles he faced was not having a printing company that could make his vibrant colors and creative shapes come alive, while also delivering finished projects in a timely manner. “Most of my clients leave the promotion part of their gig to the last minute,” states Chris. “That’s why I needed a company with fast turnaround times but with quality to help convey the feeling of the band that I create with my art.” Chris discussed his dilemma with a fellow promoter and was referred to PsPrint. He then did a Google search and noticed PsPrint again. “I decided to give PsPrint a chance on one of my projects in 2003. I have not used another company since. I love the fact that I control the entire project, from placing the order, to approving the artwork, to selecting the best delivery mode for me.” What Chris loves most about his profession is seeing the look on his customer’s face when his creative skills exceed their expectations. That’s what he strives for on each and every project. Chris' suggestion for anyone wanting to start a business—develop a solid business plan. He created one in 2000 when he started his business and continues to update his business plan on a yearly basis.

Brian Tsai | Artist, Self Employed Valued Customer Since: 2007
Brian had been an artist for several years, producing intriguing pieces that speak to mind and soul. While he had always enjoyed producing his pieces, he realized that in order to continue doing it he needed some marketing and publicity. After inquiring with some agencies about marketing campaigns, Brian decided that their services were more expensive than he could comfortably manage at the time. Instead, he decided to enroll in Macromedia and Illustrator classes along with some basic marketing seminars to expand his knowledge and see if he could assemble his own groundswell campaign to build awareness and create sales. One of Brian’s teachers told him about PsPrint, stating that he could have postcards, flyers, rack cards, and other materials produced to help him market his paintings. Brian visited psprint.com and ordered some marketing materials. “I was incredibly amazed at the simplicity of ordering from PsPrint. I selected my product, uploaded my images, and within days had postcards and rack cards in my hand to pass out at an upcoming show.” Before ordering, Brian was a little concerned about quality. “I’ve tried some other online printing companies and the quality was just not there. But with PsPrint, the paper quality was fantastic and the printing came out just the way I imagined. I am really proud to distribute these materials to prospective clients as they reflect well on me.” For artists just starting out, Brian’s advice is to paint what you love, not what you think will sell. And always continue to explore what excites you.

Jill Martin | JAM Graphics Design Valued Customer Since: 1990
Jill Martin was tending bar part time when a customer asked her if she wanted to learn about graphic design. That was in 1976 and Jill has not looked back since. She started out designing electrical lighting power maps and business forms, and quickly discovered that she not only really enjoyed graphic design, she was also quite good at it. After a couple of years working for a design firm, Jill decided it was time to go out on her own. So at the age of 26, she bought all the necessary tools and equipment and set up shop in her apartment. When asked if she was ever intimidated, Jill states that the thought of failure never occurred to her—perhaps because she didn’t have time. In fact, her business grew so quickly that she soon moved her office to Emeryville and expanded to five employees. Jill states one sign of how long she’s been in business is that she originally had one employee dedicated to darkroom work and one to typesetting.

In 1990, Jill decided to give PsPrint a try. “I’ve remained a PsPrint customer for all these years for two very simple reasons—the great service and the competitive prices. In fact, I had one client that insisted on using a different printer. Well, we had a dreadful experience with the other company and my client actually had the postcard reprinted with PsPrint. Needless to say, they insist I use PsPrint on all their projects now.”

What is Jill’s advice to someone starting out in business today? “Stay up-to-date on all the new technology and learn all the new programs.” Learning these new programs does not have to be expensive, either. “Take a look at your local community colleges as they usually have great teachers and good prices.” Jill also feels that many people give up too quickly when starting a new business. “Give it five years before you decide it’s not for you.” Finally, Jill says that the most important thing is to love what you do. “Then it never feels like work.”

Nancy Hayssen | Sonoma County Airport Valued Customer Since: 2003
It seems Nancy Hayssen was born to fly. Her passion for flying came from her father, a pilot who manages his own flight school. Along with a passion for flying comes a strong sense of adventure and an entrepreneurial spirit that has never let anything get in her way. At age 19, Nancy started a business developing websites. She discovered that she really liked the “new medium” and started to help out family members with their marketing efforts as well. In fact, she helped her uncle with his website and materials when he started his company. Then she combined her love of traveling with an idea that she had for a while: a business that provides aerial tours of Sonoma’s wine country. From that grew the idea of unique travel adventures in Sonoma County including narrated tours over the coastlines, providing gift baskets—anything that would combine the joy of flying with the delight of visiting beautiful wine country. Nancy did her research before setting up shop. And in 2003, while researching ways to promote her business, she discovered PsPrint. She’s been a customer ever since. “I love the service, the ease of use that the website offers, and most of all, the timeliness,” states Nancy. “I know that I can count on my promotional materials being ready on time.”

Nancy’s advice to anyone who wants to enter the web design arena? Follow your heart. Dave Wren | David Wren Marketing Valued Customer Since: 2006
You could say that Dave Wren grew up with marketing in his blood. His father ran a marketing firm for over 30 years, and all along, Dave was learning from him. After graduating from college with majors in journalism and marketing, Dave worked for entrepreneurial companies before deciding to start his own marketing firm about 10 years ago. Dave really enjoys working for himself and helping his clients with a wide variety of marketing projects including direct mail campaigns, advertising, and newsletters. When Dave discovered PsPrint, he decided to test the services with smaller projects. After all, he was not sure of the quality and the company’s online print capabilities. He had used other online printers in the past and had experienced several problems including not having access to proofs and not having projects delivered on time. The quality and on-time delivery of those first small projects have led to much larger projects including Dave’s latest print project: a 10-page promotional catalog with mailing services. “I’m always looking at getting good value with the best products for my clients” states Dave. “After all, I want to deliver the biggest bang for their marketing dollars. PsPrint allows me to do just that, with high quality, a wide breadth of products, and now mailing services.” Dave’s experiences with PsPrint’s mailing services have been stellar. In fact, PsPrint’s staff is so process oriented that Dave is able to count on them to ensure that all the mailing pieces pass postal regulations. “I have now printed over 100 jobs with PsPrint and have not been disappointed, even once.”

Dave’s advice for people interested in direct mail? Do it! You have to look at your mail everyday, whether for the PG&E bill or a letter from Aunt Mary. If your marketing piece has solid content and good design, you will get the audience’s attention. Get into your customer’s mindset and produce pieces that they want to see. And definitely use PsPrint’s mailing services to make sure your message gets into the right hands at the right time.”

Laney Atherton | Koenig School of Dance Valued Customer Since: 2002
Koenig School of Dance was established in August 2005, in Spring, Texas, and is dedicated to teaching children and adults the foundations of dance in a positive and caring environment. Their goal is to provide the training that will enable your child to reach his or her full dance potential while building self-esteem, poise, and a true love for dance as an art form. When Laney Atherton joined Koenig School of Dance as the Assistant Director, she had already discovered PsPrint several years earlier when she was looking for a printer for her personal artwork sales project. At that time, she was developing a catalog to display her artwork for an upcoming sale. While conducting an online search, she came across PsPrint. After visiting the website, she decided to place an order. “This was the first time I had used an online printer,” states Laney. “I had a couple of questions and emailed customer service. I was pleasantly surprised with the quick response and the professionalism of the staff.” Once the order was placed, Laney received constant updates on the status of her project. “I loved the way my catalogs came out. It really showcased my art and I believe, helped me sell quite a bit.”

At Koenig, Laney needed to promote an upcoming dance event. She turned to PsPrint to produce posters, event tickets, and program guides at a fraction of the cost the local printer was charging. As an education center, budget is always a concern. But as a school of dance, Laney really wanted superb quality. “The posters turned out so well that all of the students were clamoring for copies. I’m definitely going to be turning to PsPrint for our next printing project.”

Laney’s advice to anyone considering using an online printer? “Definitely use PsPrint. Always triple check every piece of artwork for design flaws, and use the helpful PDF review tools that PsPrint provides on their website to instantly approve your uploaded art before it goes to press.”

Molly Prelude | 8mm Ideas Valued Customer Since: 2006
Molly Prelude has been creating unique cards for quite some time but her company is celebrating its first official anniversary. Molly started out by creating one-of-a-kind cards and pictures that friends loved. “Everyone would always say that I should have multiples so I could sell them,” states Molly.

So after she stopped acting on stage and began teaching acting, she had some more time to devote to creating unique cards. “I’ve always been creative and I’m also addicted to paper—the quality, the texture—all of the different facets of it.” Finally, a year ago, Molly started selling her creations. She sells her work wholesale on her website and also attends the annual National Stationery Tradeshow. To promote her cards, Molly needed to print some postcards that she had made of her art. Her friend referred her to PsPrint. Molly wasn’t sure about using an online printer since she is the first to admit that she is no techie. However, once she visited the PsPrint site, she found the website easy to use.

“What I love about PsPrint, aside from how easy it is to use, are the great deals I get. The prices are fantastic and I love the quality of my postcards.” Molly is so thrilled with her postcard printing that she’s referred several friends and colleagues to PsPrint.

What’s Molly’s advice to aspiring artists? Don’t hold back. Don’t sit on your idea or your creativity. If you have a great idea, start showing it to people. It’s the best way to get started. Also, always have a business card or a postcard—something that has your art on it—along with your contact information so that people can always reach you.

Rupert Piston | Cartoon Thunder Valued Customer Since: 2007
Rupert Piston had been a doodler all his life. Though he’d never taken an art class, he would sketch daily and began to make postcards out of the sketches and mail them to friends. He never thought it would amount to anything, but friends and family really liked the postcards and passed them on to their friends. Before he knew it, people were asking to buy his art. Rupert says his work has evolved significantly in the five years he’s been creating his artwork. “I think my work was a bit primitive when I started. I’ve gotten much faster and better as I’ve progressed.”

Rupert was searching for a printer online when he came across PsPrint. “I ordered a sample pack to review the quality of printed items,” said Rupert. “I was really impressed with the quality and decided to place an order.” That was in spring of 2007 and Rupert has not used anyone else since. “I recommend PsPrint to everyone I encounter. The price and the quality are fantastic and the customer service is exceptional.” Recently, Rupert needed to order his art as Christmas cards and needed to have them quickly. However, after making an error when placing his order, he did not think he would be able to have his cards completed in time. Rupert contacted customer service who “spent 15 minutes talking me through my error,” and was able to complete the process and have his cards on time.

Rupert’s advice for budding artists—share your work with friends, family and people whose opinion you respect. That’s the best way to grow.

Chris Tallerico | Lord & Sons Valued Customer Since: 2005
When Chris Tallerico joined Lord & Sons at their corporate headquarters in Oakland, CA, he needed to produce several marketing items for the company. Lord & Sons supplies fastening systems and construction products used in building both residential and commercial properties. The company has 6 offices throughout California and carries over 20,000 different products. On the recommendation of a graphic designer friend, Chris decided to place an order with PsPrint. One of Chris’ reasons for selecting PsPrint was the affordable price. But as Chris would need all types of projects, including catalogs, posters, stickers and custom orders, he soon realized that service was even more important. This was the first time that the company had used an online printing service instead of placing orders with a local printer.

“I was incredibly impressed with Chela Oropeza,” stated Chris. “He went out of his way to ensure that things were handled properly. And if I ever had a problem, I could just pick up the phone and contact Chela. He made everything right.” That type of customer service, along with being able to place custom orders, made the experience better than the local printer and at half the cost. Chris has been in construction since he was 17. “I’ve seen all the ups and downs in the industry—the 1991 recession, the dot gone era, and the 9/11 swoon” states Chris. “But the one thing I do know is that if you do the right thing for the customer, you’ll survive all the ups and downs.”

Chris’ advice for anyone looking to start out in the construction industry? Work for a reputable, mid-size firm. You’ll learn a lot.
